Ante el envejecimiento que sufre Europa, del que las zonas rurales de Castilla y León es un gran exponente con una media superior a la del resto de España con personas de 65 o más años, se presenta una situación en la que las personas mayores dependientes viven en sus casas y son atendidos no solo por su cónyuge u otro miembro de la familia sino también por vecinos o amigos quienes ejercen el papel de cuidador informal, no siendo remunerados por ello.
